Ottawa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission, or better known as "OC Transpo", is the major transit agency providing public bus services in the region of Ottawa, ON. OC Transpo also provides some services to Gatineau, Quebec, mostly during peak hours. OC Transpo currently operates a fleet of approximately 1070 buses serving 248 routes on a daily basis. One of the most interesting feature of the transit system in Ottawa is the transitway, a restricted corridor for transit buses only, providing rapid transit connections through the entire city from Kanata in Northwest Ottawa to Airport and Barrhaven in the south, to Trim and Millennium Park in the east. This 31km transitway project was planned and approved in 1978, finally completed in its entirety 18 years later in 1996. The next phase of the transitway project includes the construction of a transit tunnel in downtown Ottawa (similar to the bus tunnel system in downtown Seattle), and the conversion of the current transitway to light-rail operations.
